Through this project we expect to enhance the information available to the Malagasy people concerning the bryophytes that occur in the country.
The first bryophyte identification workshop in Antananarivo, for the BRYOTAN
project, funded by GBIF BID, was organized in September 2018. Students from Antananarivo University and Mahajanga University attended the workshop, and received additional training during the field trip that followed. See: workshop pages
Biodiversity Management
Bryophytes are not currently taken into account in conservation checklists for Madagascar.
We hope to improve this situation by providing sufficient data so that bryophytes may fully considered when making conservation and management decisions that affect biodiversity.
Biotechnology Applications
Bryophytes are known to produce unique chemical compounds. New applications may be developed in a sustainable way (medicines, cosmetics, etc.), supporting local development.
